Covid Work Reflections – 1

There is a notion I have that educated, committed people can be a useful bridge between the priviledged and underpriviledged. This happens for example, when well-educated activists work with communities. Some things become possible, for example, police or bureaucrats don’t find it so easy to take advantaged of vulnerable communities. Or the stories of these communities have a chance of making it to media where otherwise they may not. A small example of that happened during our recent Covid work. A chain of people enabled money for medical
help to reach a struggling family.

  • A friend of the family talked to our staff member in Anantapur
  • The staff member talked to me
  • My friend in Bangalore was doing fund-raising for medical expenses and several of his friends had contributed quite large amounts

We were able to provide 3.75 Lakhs to the family through this chain. The patient, whose name I am not mentioning to respect their privacy is currently still in hospital and not out of danger, and the full medical cost is staggeringly high. Nevertheless, some help still got mobilized and the family was very grateful.
